Manchester, UK indie quintet, Polytechnic, display none of the trademark baggy swagger that's become synonymous with their hometown. Instead their music draws from the lo-fi US guitar bands of the 1990s--Pavement in particular are an audible influence--the jangling guitars are more Felt than Stone Roses, and the yelping vocals align them with angular US counterparts such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and the Arcade Fire. Championed by uber-indie DJ Steve Lamacq, the band's profile grew steadily following support slots with the Breeders leading to a deal with influential label, Transgressive Records, home to the Young Knives and the Shins.
