The brand new album from the lyrical genius behind The Housemartins and the Beautiful South. Following the split of the Beautiful South in 2007 (due to "musical similarities"), Heaton set about recruiting a new band and writing a set of outstanding pop tunes. Harder, rockier and louder than the Beautiful South, the album nonetheless packed with the sweet melodies and exquiste turns of phrase that underpinned Heaton's career since 1983.
'The Cross Eyed Rambler', an album full of wry observations, and pithy, funny, rabble rousing, declactions about the state of the country, is the next step in the career of Paul Heaton and will see him established as one of the great British songwriters.

God Bless Texas? No, God Bless Paul Heaton!
12 May, 2010
This is one of those rare CDs where every single track is a gem - no fillers here from start to finish.
Beginning with the quirky title track, we hear the old gramophone style vocal with acoustic guitar, complete with skips, jumps and crackles - what is going on? No worries as this leads in to the rocky I Do and classic, catchy single, Mermaids And Slaves.
Thought-provoking lyrics make you wince one moment then LOL as the master songwriter, Paul Heaton, demonstrates his solo efforts excel even his own illustrious past - if that is possible! Great song entitled The Pub is about, well ... er ...a pub and how fashions change with time from quiz night to disco etc - we can all relate to that. A great singalong rocker, Good Old Fashioned Town, leads in to the BS like Ring From Your Hand and yet we are only half way through this wonderful collection of varied songs.
My personal favourite is God Bless Texas telling of the excesses of some inhabitants of that State - ending with simple but effective hook line sung to a single guitar. God bless Paul Heaton!
There is still time for Little Red Rooster with advice for those slightly older men! The CD ends with tour de force Everything Is Everything which admittedly contains some colourful language but this does not detract from a fine collection of songs.
This CD is highly recommended. Buy it without question - you won't be disappointed.
