product details & reviews
The brainchild of iconic singer Damon Albarn and Tank Girl co-creator Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz are made up of mysterious and imaginative cartoon characters. While the image is powerful, it is the music that has ultimately made this project such a multi-million selling success. Albarn's ability to diversify musically shows no signs of slowing down on 'Plastic Beach', the follow-up to 2005's 'Demon Days'. Collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Little Dragon and more make this a truly special album.
Jan 2010
'Plastic Beach' is the third studio album of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's virtual creation. The album will feature super heavyweight contributions from the likes of Snoop Dogg, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Kano, Bashy, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Little Dragon, Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon.
Five years on from the release of Demon Days, Murdoc Niccals and co. return with Gorillaz. The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.
- Rolling Stone - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "PLASTIC BEACH, Gorillaz's third excellent album in a row, is all Albarn -- he writes the tunes, produces, sings, plays most of the music and gets people on the phone for left-field cameos..."
- Pitchfork - ""[The] group's most affecting an uniquely inviting album....A loose environmental-song cycle warning against disposability."
- Spin - "Albarn's love of 'Waterloo Sunset' poignancy adds emotional weight..."

Best Yet!
14 March, 2010
I was quite surprised to how good this really was! I wasn't a huge fan of the first two, although there were a few good ones, this one is full of brilliant tracks! I love this whole Plastic Beach concept where its a lonely island far away from land, the music just sounds brilliant. It's so idyllic and mind blowing. A few hip-hop tracks that fit nicely into Albarns credits, but its the Pop songs on offer here that bring something magical to Plastic Beach, I don't think i've loved a pop album as much as this. The collaberations with Little Dragon and Bobby Womack are superb, and also Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon. At first I was worried about all these other stars not sounding like Gorillaz but after a listen it just works fantastically!
Album of 2010 easily

Older stuff is better
13 March, 2010
When i heard Gorillaz were releasing a new album i had high expectations, unfortunately this does not stand out unlike their debut, which has to be said, was their best stuff by far. I won't deny, songs like Rhinestone Eyes, On Melancholy Hill and Private Jet are the best songs on here and will make a nice summer album. But these are songs they have done by themselves and have no guest appearances on, all of the other songs are to be honest leading to something and when that something comes it is a let down. Stick to the older albums because classics like Clint Eastward, 19-2000 and Feel Good Inc. are a lot better than any song on here. Depending if you are into the rap sort of music you may well like this, if not love it, but from a fan that has liked them since their debut, this, sorry, is a let down.
