David Rees-Williams has taken the Jacques Loussier style of swinging Bach way further, tackling Franck, Grieg and Ravel with his piano trio while adding Hammond organ to the mix. The results are beautiful, subtle and dramatic.
"What we now call "classical music" once gave players plenty of room for improvisation. Many Baroque scores were left wide open to embellishment and ornamentation, and contemporary performers were long offered the chance to shine during extemporised cadenzas.
These days, most classical players stick to the notes as written, and the mantle of improvisation has passed to jazz. The David Rees-Williams Trio "look further than the written note" to explore the implications of famous classical works within a jazz idiom.
The album relies heavily on Bach and other Baroque music, looking over its shoulder to earlier reinterpretations like those of Jacques Loussier. Perhaps more intriguing are tracks that take romantic works by Franck, Grieg, Debussy and Ravel as their starting points. The trio memorably tackle the 3rd movement of Ravel's already fairly jazzy Sonatine, bringing out the toccata's jagged energies through fevered interplay between piano and Hammond. - HMV Choice
