product details & reviews
Californian goth-punk quartet follow up 2003's 'Sing The Sorrow' with this, their seventh album. AFI have always striven to do something different with every new release and this time they have delivered their boldest statement to date. Working once again with producer Jerry Finn, here they expand on the grandiose, dramatic flair that surfaced on 'Sing The Sorrow' and experiment with more synths and programming (provided by Ronan Harris of UK electropop duo VNV Nation). Includes the single 'Miss Murder'.
May 2006
AFI are back with a storming new album 'Decemberunderground' - and they're bigger and better than ever before. 'Decemberunderground' is the sound of a band in full stride; opening with a trademark AFI intro that sounds like it could have been used in some sort of ancient ritual thanks to the sinister stomps and claps provided by some lucky fans in the studio. First single 'Miss Murder' peaks with the type of chorus that's made AFI's name - raucous!
Other highlights are 'Love Like Winter', 'Kill Caustic' and 'Affliction'. Exclusive tracks on the UK album are 'Rabbits Are Roadkill' and a cover of NIN's 'Head Like A Hole'. The album is produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day) and will be the band's first long player since 2003's 'Sing The Sorrow'.
- Rolling Stone (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here are moments on DECMBERUNDERGROUND that are poppier than anything AFI have ever done....A thoroughly enjoyable album to listen to..."
Spin (p.81) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "DECEMBERUNDERGROUND sounds terrific....[It] has enough catchy refrains to make it a summer favorite for anyone looking to work out their aggressions."

AFI: Davey Havok (vocals); Jade Puget (guitar); Hunter (bass guitar); Adam Carson (drums).
On its seventh full-length album, AFI (A Fire Inside) reunites with renowned producer Jerry Finn for a strikingly dynamic outing that builds on its highly successful predecessor, SING THE SORROW. While the California-based goth-influenced band still excels at hard-edged punk-pop, as best revealed on the catchy anthem "Miss Murder," it also makes impressive forays into techno-tinged rock on the surging "Love Like Winter" and the brooding, Depeche Mode-like "37mm." Although DECEMBERUNDERGROUND's few "screamo" moments prove to be a bit distracting, particularly on "Kill Caustic" and "Afflication," they reinforce both frontman Davey Havok's vocal range and the group's willingness to journey around the stylistic map, resulting in a bold, assured record.
Hardcore revivalists-turned-goth-punks AFI ascended to a new level of stardom when they decided to slap on some eyeliner and embrace their inner Robert Smiths. After several independent releases, the Southern California-based outfit released their major-label debut, SING THE SORROW, in 2003 to much acclaim. That album's darker new-wave tendencies were taken one step further on 2006's DECEMBERUNDERGROUND. AFI's gloomier aesthetic was only given further validation by their legions of fans who dubbed themselves the Despair Faction.
