product details & reviews
After the success of PEACE SELLSaBUT WHO'S BUYING? in 1986 and SO FAR, SO GOOD, SO WHAT! in 1988, Megadeth was fast becoming one of thrash metal's leading outfits. However, the band's hard work was nearly derailed because of the continuous dismissals of band members and chronic substance abuse. Founding members Dave Mustaine (guitar/vocals) and Dave Ellefson (bass) changed their ways before work on their fourth album began, hiring drummer Nick Menza and ex-Cacophony guitarist Marty Friedman. When Megadeth re-emerged with RUST IN PEACE in 1990, metalheads were happy to hear that the changes hadn't dulled their attack in the slightest.
"Holy WarsaThe Punishment Due" is an absolutely crushing opener that shows off the technical expertise of the musicians, while "Hangar 18" covers the familiar ground of alien visitation and government conspiracy. Both videos were put in heavy rotation on MTV's Headbanger's Ball program, which helped land the band a spot on the successful heavy 'Clash of the Titans' tour with Anthrax, Slayer, and Alice In Chains. Other highlights include the heavy hitters "Five Magics", "Lucretia", and "Rust in PeaceaPolaris".
- Rolling Stone (11/15/90) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "The arrangements...are consistently riveting...[carrying] Megadeth's individuality into a broader, more open musical arena where nobody can touch them."
Spin (12/90) - "...a mature, complex, surprisingly consonant, sparely produced album...Simply put, RUST never sleeps."
NME - "...This is a moshing album that really manages to mosh...A veritable treat for the ears...."
Musician (1/91, p.92) - "...Don't mistake Megadeath's apocalyptic imagery for doomsday overkill...even without the lyrics, this band's instrumental attack is so ferocious these songs would sound like the end of the world anyway..." - Kerrang (21/08/04, p.40) - 5 (out of 5) - "...simply one of the greatest metal albums of all time"

Megadeths' magnum opus
19 July, 2008
This is Megadeth's most progressive album, not in the sense that they use keyboards or synths (as they do not), but in the sense that this is their most embellished and most ellaborate work.
Few of their other albums come close to the complexity displayed in this album. From start to finish this album is a classic, no doubt a must for any thrash/speed metal fan let alone Megadeth fan. It's that good.
All of the tracks are brilliant, even the demo ones do, which sound slightly faster and have Chris Poland playing what would later be Marty Friedman's parts (in my opinion Poland sounds better).
However, I only ever skip Dawn Patrol as it's like an abrupt pause in the middle of a really energetic string of songs which really does sound out of place if you've heard the album, though this is really minor criticism considering the rest of the album is so good.
Also to note, some of the vocal tracks had to be redone during the remaster (Take No Prisoners, Five Magics and Lucretia) , as I havn't heard the original album, I can't compare but this version is excellent anyway.
My three favourite tracks are Tornado of Souls, Five Magics and Hangar 18.

Before founding Megadeth in 1983, Dave Mustaine was an original member of Metallica (his songs were recorded by them after his departure). With Megadeth, however, he pursued his own vision; equally inspired by heavy metal and punk, Mustaine and company released some pioneering thrash-metal in the '80s. Over the years, through personnel changes and stylistic evolution towards a more melodic, accessible sound, Megadeth sold millions of records and became one of the most influential metal bands of their era.
