'City' is the follow up to Client's self-titled 2003 debut, an album that introduced the band as innovators and experimentalists with a knack for a great pop hook. This sophomore effort features the unique talents of Libertine brawlers Pete Doherty and Carl Barat and Depeche Mode's Martin Gore and takes another giant leap forward towards huge success. This is dark and sexy electronica referencing Joy Division, Kraftwerk and The Smiths that consistently surprises and thrills.
"Icy electro pop"- Q
----------------------------------------
Lo-fi electro-pop duo Client roped in a selection of rock and roll royalty for the making of this record: Martin Gore from Depeche Mode and Carl & Pete from the Libertines make (separate) appearances. Yet the genius of this record lies not with the star contributors, who keep very much to the background (yes, even Mr Doherty), but in the finely crafted synth-pop and understated cool of the Client girls themselves. A record that is sure to adorn my stereo for many years to come, it beats Goldfrapp at their own game, and proves that when it comes to electro, the girls are on top. From the storming distain of 'In it for the Money', to the distant melancholia of 'The Chill of October', this is a record that just keeps on giving.
