Kristen Wiig & Annie Mumulo to write Cinderella stepsisters spin-off for Disney

Bridesmaids duo set to pen spin-off movie centred around Cinderella's wicked stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella...

With the success of films like Maleficent and other fairy tale spin-offs such as Cruella set to arrive imminently, the folks at Disney seem intent on exploring the idea further with plans for a new film centred around Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters, for which they’ve secured the screenwriting services of Bridesmaids co-writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo, according to a report from Deadline.

Wiig and Mumulo are currently enjoying a wave of appreciation from critics on the back of their recent comedy Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar, in which the pair also star, and will soon be applying their writing talents to the story of Cinderella’s stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella.

The project is still in the early stages of development and, as things stand, it isn’t clear whether Wiig and Mumulo will be starring in the movie themselves, although it’s thought to be unlikely at this stage that they would appear in the lead roles since at least part of the storyline is set to revolve around the stepsisters’ childhood, which likely means casting younger actresses for at least part of the story.

The film is pitched as a ‘fairy tale musical comedy’ that will serve as a retelling of the Cinderella story from her stepsisters’ point of view, charting their lives from their youth, through Cinderella’s marriage and beyond.

Along with Cruella, which stars Emma Stone and is set to debut in May this year, the new stepsisters film forms a trio of similar spin-offs currently in the works, with Josh Gad and Luke Evans set to reprise their roles from Beauty & the Beast in a new prequel TV series for Disney+, Gaston and LeFou.

The new Cinderella spinoff has no title or projected release date as yet, but Wiig and Mumulo are understood to be working currently on the script, with Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum from Gloria Sanchez Procuctions on board to produce.
