Universal Pictures has cancelled the release of new horror The Hunt.
The film is set at a remote Manor House where a group of wealthy people gather to hunt humans for sport, and, in the wake of a series of mass shootings in the US, the studio have taken the decision to pull the plug.
A statement given to Variety from Universal reads: "While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for The Hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film."
They continued: "We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film."
The Hunt starred Ike Barinholtz, Betty Gilpin, Emma Roberts, Hilary Swank and Justin Hartley, with Z For Zachariah and Compliance director Craig Zobel taking charge, working from a script from Nick Cuse and Lost creator Damon Lindelof.
There is no word on a new release date for the film as yet.
