In My Record Collection, we dig down to the bottom of musicians' souls to find out what the most treasured parts of their record collection are. This week, it's the turn of epic post-rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks and their guitarist Mike Palmer. Let's see what he's picked out...

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

"A Hanson album on cassette. I feel like it has to be their first one as I'm sure one of them was like 11 years old when it came out. Then after that a bunch of CD singles. Remember them? I was into dance music as a kid because of 'Music', the PlayStation game."

"I could make similar sounding stuff myself at home, so I loved dance music. I was into good stuff too. When I was 13 my favourite band was Leftfield. But I also bought loads of those radio-friendly dance singles. 'Toca's Miracle' is still amazing obvs, but I also bought all the not-amazing ones."

The record that made me want to be in a band was…

"Radiohead's OK Computer. It was the first time I'd heard anyone play guitar in a way that I thought was cool. From the very first listen. I hit play, 'Airbag' comes on and I think "huh". Then 'Paranoid Android' after that and I lose my mind. "What IS THIS?!"

The record I've played more than any other is…

"Radiohead again. Probably Kid A. That's probably a stock answer, but for something to be played more than any other it has to be someone you bought a long time ago but still holds up and that's Kid A. Though when we were in high school, me and Adam would both play Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon constantly on our CD Walkman's. It's weird not saying CD Walkmen, but there you go. Anyway, we'd listen to that over and over. Not so much recently. Need to dig that back out. But Kid A is my real answer."

The record that always makes me feel good is…

"Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective. I forget how good it really is and then I put it on and then I remember again."

The record I turn to when I'm feeling down is…

"I have a couple of go-to's on tour when it's post-show and driving and home is weeks away. Alopecia by Why? or Acid Rap by Chance. Or any Explosions in the Sky always lifts me up again, especially their latest, The Wilderness. A masterpiece."

The record I think is the most underrated of all time is…

"The Longcut's first album springs to mind. People who know it, love it. Another one is the second Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album. It's amazing. The first track is mega distorted and has the click track all the way through, I mean, come on."

The record with my favourite cover art is…

"For this one, I'd choose Take Care, Take Care, Take Care by Explosions in the Sky. You can unfold it and it makes a house and it's beautiful and fits the record so well."

The record with my favourite title is…

"Beaucoup Fish' by Underworld and I don't know why, it just is..."

The record I can't understand why everybody loves is…

"To be honest, that's most of them..."

The last record I bought was…

"Weezer's Pinkerton on vinyl as an anniversary present for my wife. She walked down the aisle to a string quartet version of 'Falling For You'. True."

The record I'm most looking forward to hearing in 2018 is…

"The Twilight Sad's new album. Plus Childish Gambino if those rumours are true."

The greatest record of all time is…

"Shoutout to Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but it's Kid A, alright. It just is."
