Jim Loach directs this drama about the woman who uncovered the hidden plight of the children in the British care system who were illegally deported to Commonwealth countries during the 1940s and 50s. Emily Watson stars as Margaret Humphreys, the Nottingham social worker who, in the 1980s, exposes the shocking secret that the British government has kept hidden for years: namely, that over 130,000 children, some as young as four, had been taken to children's homes on the other side of the world, where many were subjected to appalling hardship and abuse. Supported by her husband Merv (Richard Dillane), also a social worker, Margaret takes on the authorities in both Britain and Australia in her battle to expose the scandal and provide answers for its emotionally damaged victims.
