Country was born in the Appalachian region of the United States in the early 20th century as an amalgamation of folk, blues and traditional Irish and Scottish ballads. Jimmie Rodgers, also known as the "Father of Country Music", and the Carter Family were the early pioneers, creating the harmonies and song structures that would underpin the genre.
As it began to spread it evolved into a more polished and commercial style, with Nashville asserting itself as the heart of the scene during the 1940s and 50s.
