The history of jazz music
Jazz's roots are in African rhythms, the blues and ragtime. It quickly spread from its origins in early-20th-century New Orleans across the rest of the United States and the world.
Louis Armstrong shaped things early on with his distinctive vocal style and powerful trumpet, but by the 1930s and 40s jazz was moving to more complex forms thanks to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
Miles Davis and John Coltrane brought things back a notch with the cool jazz of the 1960s, and nowadays the genre incorporates elements of funk and electronic music.

Key jazz artists and influential figures
Louis Armstrong
A virtuoso on the trumpet possessing a gravelly voice, Armstrong – known as "The King of Jazz" – established himself as a central figure in the development of early jazz.
Charlie Parker
By bringing complex harmonic structures and lightning-fast improvisation, Parker forever changed the jazz landscape.
Miles Davis
Moving from bebop to cool jazz, modal jazz and later fusion, Davis helped steer the course of the genre over multiple decades.
Duke Ellington
As one of the most important composers and bandleaders in jazz history, Ellington helped define the sound with lush arrangements and compositions.

The modern evolution of jazz music
The envelope continues to be pushed by modern jazz artists, bringing in aspects of hip-hop, R&B and soul to help the genre reach new audiences.
World music has also found a footing in jazz music, with African, Latin and Caribbean sounds further altering the view of what the genre can be.

Essential jazz albums and recordings
  • Miles Davis – Kind of Blue: A landmark in the history of jazz music, Kind of Blue is a defining example of modal jazz that displays wonderful improvisation and harmonies.
  • John Coltrane – A Love Supreme: This is a deeply spiritual expression of Coltrane's view of modal jazz and the journey he went on.
  • Louis Armstrong – The Best of Louis Armstrong: The greatest hits from the King of Jazz will keep you captivated from start to finish.
  • Duke Ellington – Ellington at Newport: A live recording that is one of the finest examples of big band jazz.
  • Herbie Hancock – Head Hunters: This blend of jazz, funk and electronic on this record provided a groundbreaking movement in the jazz fusion movement.
