Released: 25th September 2025. Teenage Daydream: An insightful book about punk music and what came next
Debsey Wykes formed Dolly Mixture in Cambridge in 1978 with two school friends. Once John Peel heard their sound, the trio were launched into the spotlight and quickly became beloved by the media. She'd gone from having posters of her favourite artists on her bedroom walls to playing bass and singing alongside them.
But this was the musky, misogynistic, male-dominated world of the UK music industry in the late 1970s, and Dolly Mixture had to prove they were more than just a novelty act.
They did just that, supporting major alternative groups like Dexys Midnight Runners, The Jam and The Undertones. They enjoyed number-one success alongside Captain Sensible of The Damned on 1982's surreal cover version of 'Happy Talk'. But, despite the Top of the Pops performances and endorsements from fellow musicians, mainstream success eluded them.
However, today, Dolly Mixture reissues sell out around the world as quickly as they are printed, proving that there are different ways to triumph.
'Teenage Daydream' is a unique story of the dreams we have and the paths we take to achieve them.
Debsey Wykes: Author biography
As part of Dolly Mixture, Debsey Wykes released a double album, 'Demonstration Tapes', in 1984, followed by the EP 'Fireside', before the trio dissolved the band the same year. However, there have been reunions and reissues in the years since.
From there, Wykes went on to greater prominence with Saint Etienne, darlings of the indie scene in the 1990s. She's performed with them since 1992.
*Limited signed edition includes a signed inner sticker affixed to the inside of the book.
