Trotter Poll employee Peter Marshall (MacMurray) is sent to look for a missing colleague. On his search he meets the Fleagles, a family of hillbillies who are desperately trying to locate a stash of money. The $70,000 was stolen by the father, who has since been executed, and daughter Bonnie (Barbara Pepper), who has been imprisoned. The grandmother, who is on her deathbed, is the only one who knows the location of the cash. Although she refuses to tell her family, she imparts a clue to its whereabouts to Peter before she dies. Meanwhile, Claire Matthews (Walker) shows up claiming to be Bonnie in an attempt to secure the loot to free her father, who has been implicated in the robbery. Peter and Claire work together to decipher the clue and find the money but the Fleagle family are hot on their trail.
