During the Japanese occupation of China in the 1930s, a small village home to an impoverished family is taken under the jurisdiction of the Japanese army. The family is split by this event with one of the sons, Zhongliang (Jin), leaving his wife, Sufen (Bai), and child to enlist with the Chinese military as a medic, and another son, Zhangmin dissapearing in order to protect his family. While Sufen and her son suffer under the boot of the occupation, Zhongliang finds himself rising in status and wealth.
