The Who are quite likely considered, along with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, to be one of the top three supergroups produced by Britain during the 1960s. Originally seen as part of the Mod youth movement, although it is unclear, even now, how much of that was genuine, and how much of that was the stylings of their first manager Pete Meaden, Pete Townsend, the leader and main songwriter of the band revisited the Mod concept in the early 1970s for a double album called Quadrophenia. Like it’s predecessor Tommy, it is often labelled a “rock opera”. It tells the story of a young Mod called Jimmy and how he ended up marooned on a rock off the coast of Brighton. Also like its predecessor Tommy, it was made into a film starring: Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Toyah, Philip Davis, Mark Wingett, Sting and Ray Winstone.
