Inspired by the songs of The Smiths, The Jam and The Faces, Gene released four studio albums and a collection of B-sides and radio demos between 1995 and 2001, were named Best New Act at the inaugural NME awards in 1995, and went on to score 10 Top 40 hits. 'To See the Lights' is a 1996 compilation which acts as a fine album in its own right. It features early tracks such as 'For the Dead', 'Be My Light, Be My Guide', early live performances from Glastonbury, Radio 1 Sessions and The Forum and standout cover versions of 'I Say a Little Prayer' and 'Don't Let Me Down'.
