Who is Ozzy Osbourne?
Born in Birmingham in 1948, John Michael Osbourne went from high school dropout to abattoir apprentice to chart-featuring frontman by the age of 22. First forming as The Polka Tulk Blues Band, then Earth, Ozzy and his fellow bandmates – Tommy Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – favoured progressive blues-rock, and this genre underpinned many of Sabbath's early songs.
Three years and five best-selling albums on from their debut in 1970, Black Sabbath were widely acclaimed as pioneers of a new music genre that would come to be known as metal, alongside other groundbreaking British bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Heavy riffs driven by bass and drums and fantastical, rebellious lyrics took '60s rock and roll to a darker, richer place.
Known for his theatrical style, Ozzy Osbourne was the face of Black Sabbath throughout the '70s. His intense vocals and commanding presence were the perfect complement to the rugged guitars that were beginning to experiment with distortion and psychedelic solos, and his dark hair and outlined eyes came to define the look of a heavy metal star.
After being asked to leave the band in 1978, Ozzy had an impressive solo career and performed live up until the month of his death. His most famous show was in Iowa in 1982 when he bit the head off a bat live on stage. It's perhaps this devil-may-care attitude that truly defines him as innovative and exceptional and has fuelled what will be a lasting legacy.

The music of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne

The best of Black Sabbath
Ozzy Osbourne recorded nine albums with Black Sabbath, with one released every year from their inception in 1970 to his departure from the band in 1978.
The debut album that shared their name, Black Sabbath, was negatively received by critics. But when it reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart, they realised the people had spoken: it was time for the industry to go somewhere new.
Just seven months later came Paranoid, arguably the band's most famous release, which topped the UK Albums Chart. Including the punchy title track and other iconic songs such as War Pigs, an anti-war protest, this Black Sabbath album is considered the most influential in terms of heralding heavy metal music. The renowned riff of Iron Man, a futuristic vision of the apocalypse, has seen it top lists of the greatest heavy metal songs of all time.
The band's creativity only grew from there. Master of Reality, the third album, delivered their first love song and the ultra-heavy Children of the Grave. By the release of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in late 1973, Black Sabbath had found its enduring jagged yet lyrical voice.

Ozzy's 45-year solo career
From 1980 right up to his death in July 2025, Ozzy continued recording studio albums. He began big with Blizzard of Ozz, which contains the inspired song Crazy Train, a reflection of his talent and his life. A year later, he released Diary of a Madman, also recorded with guitarist Randy Rhoads. The song S.A.T.O. from this album is Ozzy Osbourne at his most sinister.
It was 1991 when Ozzy unveiled No More Tears, keeping metal alive in the emerging grunge era dominated by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. This album was comprised of relatively radio-friendly songs with lyrical contributions from Lemmy Kilmister, founder and lead vocalist of Motorhead.
Ozzy Osbourne's swansong, Patient Number 9, features a star-studded cast and retains his defining sound, a fitting end to a long and illustrious career.
