History and origins of country music
Country was born in the Appalachian region of the United States in the early 20th century as an amalgamation of folk, blues and traditional Irish and Scottish ballads. Jimmie Rodgers, also known as the "Father of Country Music", and the Carter Family were the early pioneers, creating the harmonies and song structures that would underpin the genre.
As it began to spread it evolved into a more polished and commercial style, with Nashville asserting itself as the heart of the scene during the 1940s and 50s. Artists like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings rejected that commercial shift in the 1960s and 70s, instead opting to infuse elements of rock and folk.
Country music has continued to change, with many male and female artists putting more of a pop slant alongside lyrics that stay true to the traditional focus of storytelling.

Key country music artists and influential figures
Johnny Cash
With a deeply resonant voice and heartfelt lyrics, Johnny Cash brought a rebellious spirit to the genre. His music produced ripples that were felt across rock and folk too. His memorable performances, like the live recordings on At Folsom Prison, spoke right to the heart of the working-class American.
Dolly Parton
Boasting an unparalleled voice and songwriting abilities, Dolly Parton is a legendary country music artist. Hits such as "Jolene" and "9 to 5" became beloved anthems even for people who were unfamiliar with the genre. As well as being a crossover artist, her support of equality and female empowerment solidified her as an adored figure with a wider audience.
Willie Nelson
A central figure in the outlaw country movement, Willie Nelson redefined the genre in the 1970s. Drawing on elements of rock and folk, he established a new sound that shone through in his 1975 album Red Headed Stranger.
Waylon Jennings
Like his regular collaborator Nelson, Waylon Jennings favoured an unfiltered style. Albums like Honky Tonk Heroes and Wanted! The Outlaws marked a shift in approach to country music.

The modern evolution of country music
The 90s were a defining era in country music, as the likes of Garth Brooks, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson brought it into the mainstream. Brooks found success with a blend of rock and pop influences, while Twain achieved unprecedented success with her album Come on Over.
In the 21st century, Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line and Sam Hunt incorporated electronic beats and modern production techniques, helping them attract a younger audience. Kacey Musgraves also played a pivotal role in country music's modern evolution, winning the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2019 by fusing indie, pop and country on Golden Hour.

Exploring country music albums and must-have recordings
  • Garth Brooks – No Fences: Redefined the sound of 90s country music and remains one of Brooks' most iconic albums.
  • Shania Twain – Come on Over: The best-selling country album by a female artist. Need we say any more?
  • Johnny Cash – American IV: The Man Comes Around: Blending country with rock, blues and folk influences, Cash delivers haunting renditions of some of his best songs.
  • Willie Nelson – Stardust: Embraces a more jazz-infused sound, highlighting his versatility.
  • Dolly Parton – Jolene: Jolene is not only one of Parton's signature songs, but it's also an album that is a cornerstone of country music.
  • Chris Stapleton – Traveller: Marked Stapleton's emergence as a powerhouse on the country scene, with "Tennessee Whiskey" becoming a modern classic.
