The origins of electronic dance music
Like most genres, dance music didn't just appear overnight. Its roots stretch back as far as the early 1970s, where artists turned to machines to create the future of music. Early synthesisers were used to push the boundaries of sound, replacing drum sets and other instruments to make backing tracks and beats easier and quicker to make.
Early pioneers like Kraftwerk embraced and popularised repetitive, electronic sounds. Their 1974 album called 'Autobahn' was one of the first to revolve around them. But electronic music was also taking off in the growing disco and hip-hop spaces. Donna Summer's 1977 hit, 'I Feel Love', produced by Giorgio Moroder, was one of the early dance music vinyls with a synthesised backing track. And The Sugar Hill Gang released their iconic 'Rapper's Delight' a couple of years later, using Chic's disco hit 'Good Times' as the backing track.
Fast forward to the 80s and 90s, and different types of electronic dance music started to reveal themselves. DJs like Frankie Knuckles fused different sounds and tempos, and the underground rave scene exploded across the UK and Europe, giving birth to genres like house, techno and trance. Then came names like Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and The Chemical Brothers – and the rest is history.

The many faces of electronic dance music
Some people consider EDM a standalone genre in itself, but it's not. It's actually the umbrella term for a range of different electronic dance music styles and subgenres. There are far too many to cover in depth, but here are some of the most popular.

House
House music is the heartbeat of the EDM space – it’s all about smooth, soulful rhythms that’ll make you move whether you’re at a club or just vibing at home. This genre also breaks down into other subgenres, like deep house and tropical house.
Originating in Chicago in the 80s, house is known for its warm basslines, catchy melodies and deep grooves. It's probably the most approachable form of EDM, with household names like Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Disclosure bringing it firmly into mainstream. A dance music compilation filled with house is probably what you'll hear in a lot of clubs these days.

Techno
Techno is like the cool, futuristic cousin – bold, intense, and full of hypnotic beats. With roots in Berlin, and later Detroit, it’s all about repetitive, mechanical rhythms that build and transform into something electrifying.
The sound is minimalistic yet powerful, and if you’ve ever gotten lost in a techno rave, you’ll know the feeling of being fully immersed in the music. Big names like Carl Cox, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin have shaped this genre into the global force it is today.

Trance
To put it simply, trance is for the dreamers. It’s uplifting and melodic, taking you on a journey with every track. With its soaring synths and epic build-ups, trance music has the power to give you that feeling of pure euphoria.
It’s a genre that fills the air with emotion and energy, perfect for those peak moments in a set when everything just clicks. With artists like Armin van Buuren and Tiësto leading the charge, trance has carved out a massive place in the hearts of EDM fans.

Dubstep
Boom! Dubstep hits you with those massive bass drops and wobbling sounds that are impossible to ignore. Born in the UK in the late 90s and early 2000s, dubstep has a signature sound: heavy basslines, intense drops, and a dark, almost gritty vibe.
Skrillex is one of the biggest names in the genre, but others like Flux Pavilion and Excision have helped turn dubstep into a global, earth-moving sensation. If you’ve ever felt the ground shake at a dubstep show, you know exactly what we mean.
