History and origins of funk and soul music

Funk and soul have their roots in the African-American experience, combining elements of blues, jazz and gospel with rhythmic grooves to get you moving.
James Brown and Ray Charles were the pioneers in the middle of the 20th century, with their use of horns and powerful vocals being key to how we understand this music today.
Social commentary was incorporated in the 1970s by artists like Sly & The Family Stone and Curtis Mayfield, while funk branched out with its own movement through Parliament-Funkadelic and George Clinton. Electronic instruments and synthesizers were introduced in the 80s, with Prince and Chaka Khan carrying the torch for the genre.

Key funk and soul music artists

James Brown

The "Godfather of Soul" revolutionised music with his hard-hitting rhythms and dynamic live performances. Tracks like "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" were fundamental to the development of funk and soul music.

Aretha Franklin

Now to the "Queen of Soul" who brought unequalled emotion and force to her music. "Respect" and "Natural Woman" became empowering anthems that established her as an icon.

Curtis Mayfield

Best known for his smooth vocals and socially conscious lyrics, Mayfield defined the blaxploitation film era with his soundtrack for the 1972 film Super Fly.

Parliament-Funkadelic

Led by the visionary George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic's psychedelic, avant-garde sound was truly revolutionary and continues to have an impact.

The modern evolution of funk and soul music

D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and Amy Winehouse helped the genre return to the mainstream, but, more recently, artists such as Anderson .Paak and Janelle Monae have delivered fresh interpretations of funk and soul music.
Through his funk and soul shows and compilation albums, radio DJ and broadcaster Craig Charles tells the story of the genre to new listeners.
