History and origins of funk and soul music
Funk and soul have their roots in the African-American experience, combining elements of blues, jazz and gospel with rhythmic grooves to get you moving.James Brown and Ray Charles were the pioneers in the middle of the 20th century, with their use of horns and powerful vocals being key to how we understand this music today.
Social commentary was incorporated in the 1970s by artists like Sly & The Family Stone and Curtis Mayfield, while funk branched out with its own movement through Parliament-Funkadelic and George Clinton. Electronic instruments and synthesizers were introduced in the 80s, with Prince and Chaka Khan carrying the torch for the genre.
