History of indie music

When independent record labels and artists began to distance themselves from the mainstream music industry, indie was born. The Smiths and R.E.M. soon rose to prominence with music that defied commercial norms and celebrated individuality.
In the 1990s, indie rock exploded with bands like Oasis, Blur and Radiohead helping redefine the genre with a unique sound and DIY ethos. As the internet made it easier for artists to distribute their music, indie pop and indie folk grew in popularity, with The Strokes, Vampire Weekend and The National being prime examples.

Key indie music artists and influential figures

The Smiths

Jangly guitars and heartfelt lyrics combined in incredibly cathartic and melancholic music that resonated with a generation of listeners.

Radiohead

Known for an experimental approach that truly pushed the boundaries, Radiohead showed how versatile indie music could be.

The National

With a brooding, reflective sound, The National became one of the most beloved indie bands of the 21st century.

The Strokes

With a sharp, guitar-driven sound, The Strokes revived indie rock in the early 2000s. They provided a glimpse into New York City's underground rock scene.

Florence + The Machine

The astounding vocals of Florence Welch shone through their ethereal sound to create something baroque and powerful.

The modern evolution of indie music

A range of new voices have come to the forefront in recent times, with the likes of Tame Impala, Lorde and Phoebe Bridgers showing the diversity on the scene. The sound now encompasses aspects of pop, folk, electronic and rock, making it one of the most varied and exciting genres.

Essential indie albums and recordings

  • The Strokes – Is This It: A landmark album that remains a classic thanks to its punchy guitars and cool, detached vocals.
  • Radiohead – OK Computer: With its complex structure, vague lyrics and experimental production, this indie album pushed the boundaries like nothing before.
  • Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend: Blending indie rock with African rhythms and pop sensibilities, Vampire Weekend created a playful sound that got stuck in your head.
  • The National – High Violet: The album that cemented The National as indie greats boasts their trademark introspective lyrics and melancholy tones.
  • Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago: Written while alone in a remote cabin in Wisconsin, Justin Vernon bares his soul on this iconic acoustic record.
