The history of K-pop music

Origins and growth in South Korea
K-pop music began in the early 1990s and was heavily influenced by Western pop, hip-hop and R&B. The genre took shape when Seo Taiji and Boys debuted in 1992, revolutionising the music scene in South Korea. As the years progressed, K-pop's potential for commercial success became clear and iconic bands like H.O.T., Sechs Kies and S.E.S. paved the way for modern artists to reach new heights.

Global growth and popularity
By the mid-2000s, K-pop began to grow beyond South Korea’s borders, with bands such as TVXQ and Big Bang expanding their influence in Japan and China. The advent of social media in the 2010s catapulted K-pop onto the global stage. "Gangnam Style" by PSY became the first video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube in December 2012, opening the floodgates for the genre. BTS are now among the most streamed artists on Spotify, while Blackpink became the first K-pop band to headline Coachella.

Key K-pop bands and influential artists
PSY
With an influence that extends far beyond one viral hit, PSY delivers a unique blend of humour and vivid visuals. As well as breaking down barriers for K-pop, he is known for blending social commentary and satire with outlandish energy.
Big Bang
By experimenting with various styles, Big Bang created a unique sound within K-pop. It earned the boy band a global fanbase and was instrumental in shaping the direction of the modern era.
Girls' Generation
Originally a nine-piece, their accolades and success earned them the nickname of "The Nation's Girl Group" in South Korea. They returned from a five-year hiatus in 2022 to celebrate their 15th anniversary and released the studio album Forever 1.
CL
The former member of 2NE1 has made major contributions to K-pop. "The Baddest Female" gained international acclaim and she collaborated with Diplo on "Dirty Vibe" too.
