What's so special about reggae music?
Reggae embodies the soul and spirit of Jamaica, a small Caribbean island with a global reputation. What sets it apart is its unique feel and rhythm, often characterised by a syncopated beat, a slow and steady groove, and the uplifting message of peace, love and resistance.
While reggae is a treat for the ears, it's also one for the heart. The music is deeply rooted in the struggles and joys of life, inspired by the experiences of the Jamaican people and their descendants. The genre emerged in the late 1960s, combining the musical styles of mento, rocksteady and ska. But it later became the epicentre of a global movement, carrying the Rastafarian ethos to millions of people around the world. Listen to a reggae music album and you'll notice the messages of resistance, hope and freedom and challenging social injustice are central.
Fundamentally, reggae has an unmistakable sound that transports listeners to the sunny beaches and colourful streets of Jamaica. Its warm basslines, rhythmic guitar skanks and soulful vocals sound just as good today as they did decades ago. Order a reggae vinyl and start jammin'.

The icons of reggae
Names like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown and Jimmy Cliff immediately come to mind when you think of reggae. These legends shaped the sound and spearheaded the movement that turned a genre into a global phenomenon.

Bob Marley
Bob Marley is widely considered to be the undisputed king of reggae, with his timeless anthems that have transcended generations. His songs, like 'No Woman, No Cry', 'Three Little Birds' and 'Redemption Song', still resonate with people from all walks of life, while his albums are some of the most popular in our reggae vinyl collection. Many argue that Bob Marley and the Wailers' Exodus album is their finest and most impactful.

Peter Tosh
Peter Tosh was one of the founding members of the Wailers, but also a rebel with a cause. Known for his fiery political lyrics and bold activism, Tosh tackled issues like oppression and injustice head-on. With his deep, gravelly voice, he wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo – with or without Marley by his side.

Dennis Brown
The "Crown Prince of Reggae", Dennis Brown’s smooth, soulful voice made him a legend. Hits like 'Money in My Pocket' and 'Revolution' earned him a place in reggae history and international success. Brown’s music spoke to the heart, bridging the golden era of reggae with modern sounds.

Jimmy Cliff
Jimmy Cliff was instrumental in taking reggae global. With his lead acting role in 'The Harder They Come' and timeless tracks like 'Many Rivers to Cross', Cliff became the face of reggae’s worldwide reach alongside Bob Marley. He might not have been the stereotypical reggae hero, but his influence is undeniable.

What’s the best reggae album?
Choosing the best reggae album is a tough call with so many greats. It's hard to look beyond the Bob Marley albums and vinyl classics: 'Exodus', 'Legend', and The Wailers' 'Catch a Fire'. These are a gateway into the world of reggae with tracks that define the genre, like 'One Love' and 'Jammin''.
But it's worth broadening your horizons with other reggae music albums. 'Burning Spear' by Marcus Garvey (1975) and Toots & The Maytals' 'Funky Kingston' (1973) are fan favourites. So is The Congos' 'Heart Of The Congos', which came out in 1977.
So, what's the best album? The one that speaks to your soul. That’s the magic of reggae.
